Straight Talk on American with Disabilities Act Claim Settlement

The Department of Corrections (DOC) reached a preliminary settlement in a class action lawsuit filed by offenders who claimed work release facilities were closed to them because of their disabilities.

DOC will pay a total settlement of $298,800. This settlement includes a $30,000 payment to the named plaintiff, Rickey Peralez, and $1,800 to each of the 166 offenders who are qualified class members. DOC will also pay attorney fees as determined by the court.
Straight Talk on Offender Property Lawsuit Settlement

The Department of Corrections has settled a class-action lawsuit brought by offenders who either paid for the shipment of excess personal property or had excess personal property donated or destroyed when transferring between institutions between November 1998 and January 2005.

Past and current DOC inmates may be eligible for reimbursement of shipping costs and lost property. Offenders who lost property could be paid up to $75. Payments will vary for those who shipped their own property.

A third party administrator will mail notification to people who may be eligible. Claim forms and copies of the notice attached to this site are also available in law libraries of each institution.
